UN-HEARD-OF,
the maiden voyage of documentary filmmaker Jody Smith is a trailblazing
exposé on the underground rock music scene(s) in New Orleans.
Loaded with anecdotes about booze, drugs, sex, and death, the
film depicts the struggle of young creative rock musicians trying to
coexist in an environment rattled by politics, heritage, and lunacy;
an environment that notoriously "Won't let new people have a chance."
Far from being groomed for success or popularity, the musicians in this
film all share an unusually developed sense of integrity for the quality
and dedication to their particular form of expression.
UN-HEARD-OF
is more than just an aesthetic treat showcasing original, creative rock
music, it is a tale of heritage in itself. Tracing the current scene's
roots back 10 years or more with bands such as the Black Problem, Lump
and the Nipples of Isis, and more recently with bands such as
Suplecs,
Morning 40 Federation
and Black Mountain, one witnesses the birth, degeneration and renaissance
of a highly unique music scene.
For all the creative, inspiring, harsh and often comical stories to
be found in this documentary,
UN-HEARD-OF
brilliantly captures all that is true about New Orleans characters and
the outstanding music and arts they produce.
